Garrett AT Pro & AT MAX Search Coils

The search coil is a integral part of the metal detector. It is typically circular or semi circular shape and generates a strong magnetic field which senses metallic items in the ground you search in. It is typically located at the end of a stem and is connected to the detectors control housing by a cable wound around or straight up the stem.

The size and depth put out by the magnetic field is determined by the shape and the size of the metal detector coil. Understanding the use behind the different sizes, shapes and types of search-coils will aid you with the ability to choose the best search-coil for your favorite type of metal detecting.

HOW SEARCH-COILS WORK

Search-coils mostly comprise of two sets of coiled up wires, the Transmit Coil (TX) and the Receiver Coil (RX). In Pulse Induction, their Mono coils can differ from VLF coils in the way that one coil can act as both the transmit and the receiver. Some Pulse Induction have 2 coils.

When turning the detector on, the TX coil produces a strong magnetic field in the surrounding area and will charge the ground. That is why Pulse Induction detector are more sensitive when the ground is wet.

When a metal target is within this magnetic field, it will produce a disruption in the magnetic field. The receive coil (RX) coil will notice this disruption and send an alert signal to the control box where the circuit board is.

A search-coil's magnetic field pattern is determined by the combination of the transmit coils generated field and the receiving coils pickup field.
